Top Rookie RB's: Good Fantasy Picks or Not?

By: Jake

As fantasy Football is already being offered on Yahoo! (with free Stattracker), now is a good time to begin to take a look at the new additions to the most important position on your roster: the RB's. As evidenced by last years crop of Steve Slaton, Chris Johnson, and Matt Forte, rookie RBs can have an impact on fantasy teams, and in a big way. This year we have a crop of RBs that could or could not hold up the standard set by last years trio. As we go pick by pick from this years draft, we'll give your our "expert" opinion on wether or not to pick up each player in your draft this year.

Knowshon Moreno - Denver Broncos

This back is definitely worth a shot this year as the Broncos will likely switch to a more conservative offense since Cutler is now in Chicago and Orton is not as good a passer. With fewer passes comes more runs and that is gold for fantasy owners who have this RB. He will undoubtedly be the starting RB come September and he will likely not have to share very many carries even though the team signed FAs Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan, both career journeymen. Moreno will get all the goal line carries and 3rd down plays as he is also a threat in the passing game as well.

Donald Brown - Indianapolis Colts

Brown, who rushed consistently for more than 2,000 yards at UConn, will not have the same success this year in Indy. Not even close. Brown was drafted by the Colts as a compliment to Joesph Addai and nothing more. That usually spells trouble for fantasy owners, and this case is no different. Also, being on the Colts, Brown will likely block for a good portion of his game time since the Colts love to throw the ball so much. Brown may be a nice back to have in DEEP leagues, but bot in any other situation.

Chris "Beanie" Wells - Arizona Cardinals

On most other teams, Wells would be a surprisingly good fantasy RB, but he's stuck on the Cardinals, who are obviously known for their daunting passing attack. On top of that, Wells will likely share carries with second year RB Tim Hightower, who will also get most of the 3rd down plays and goal line rushes since he has proved he has a good nose for the endzone and is also a much better receiver than Wells out of the back field. Wells is a better pick than Brown, but not by much.

LeSean McCoy - Philadelphia Eagles

McCoy is probably the 2nd best rookie RB to take in this years fantasy drafts despite the man in front of him being Brian Westbrook. Westbrook has been the sole workhorse for the Eagles for a long time and is now on his last legs. Therefore its only a matter of time before he goes down with another injury or gets a reduced amount of carries, which will then go to McCoy. Although the eagles do pass a lot, McCoy shows a lot of promise and will take advantage of the lack of men in the box because of McNabb's arm.

Shonn Greene - NY Jets

Greene was a surprising pick for a team that already had two quality backs in Thomas Jones and Leon Washington. This means Greene will not be a good fantasy pick at all even though his big stature might lead to some goal line carries and TDs. Overall, not a good pick at all and I wouldn't expect him to be drafted in any league unless you an only draft players with colors as last names.
